More detailed version of Layout for Video

I typed up a more detailed version of the layout I am going to do for my video. It has a little more explanation and explains what I am going to do in smaller steps.

Neat version of Layout for Video

I typed up my rough draft of the layout I made and improved the parts that I didn't like or thought should be done differently.

Layout for Video

I made a rough first draft of the layout for my video. I made a sketch of the first idea that I had and wrote it up as a sort of template.

Decided not to order Flash after all

As I left on my summer holiday I would have no opportunity to order flash before one week before the start of the next school year. I thus decided that I would not order flash but make my animation on one of the school computers because they all have flash and I can use those. This will also save me money because flash is very expensive and I already had to pay for the adobe acrobat which turned out to be the wrong software.

The correct version of flash

Today I went to see the other computer teacher who is specialized in flash. He told me that I was correct and that adobe acrobat had nothing to do with flash. He told me that is was a program for making PDF files. He said that he would send me an email after school with the exact details of what I needed.

Adobe Acrobat instead of Flash

On slim I ordered the adobe acrobat and it arrived. It turned out that this was not what I needed to get flash on my computer. I had ordered what the computer teacher had told me to order but this was not correct. I am going to ask another tech tomorrow because I need flash to be able to work on my personal project during the summer holiday.

The Log Form

As I didn't know what the log form was that we had to sign at the end of every supervisor meeting I asked a friend to send it to me so that I could print it out and then just right down what we did in each meeting and take it too my supervisor to sign. I did that today and Mrs. Maaswinkel signed for the two meetings that we already had and I filled in the rest of the sheet.

I still knew what we had discussed in the last meeting because I had written that in my blog in another post, with a reflection of the meeting. I just looked back, read what we had done and then wrote this in the log form so that it was fully filled in.

Meeting with Mrs. Maaswinkel

I had a meeting with Mrs. Maaswinkel today and talked about my personal project and the progress I had made since the last lesson. We started of by checking the personal project guide for the things that I had to have done by the second meeting. This was the list of things that I had to have done by the second meeting.

  • Specifications for my product
  • Areas/questions for research and possible sources
  • Evidence that I had started my research, including research into my focus AOI
  • Evaluation and complete bibliography details of the sources used for research
  • Reflection on my research
  • Evidence that I have started to work on an initial design/outline for the product
  • Any questions I have for the supervisor
  • The log form to be signed at the end of every meeting
We went through this checklist and ticked of the things that I had done, most of which was on my blog.
  • Specifications for my product - I had these from my personal project proposal which I had a copy of on my blog.
  • Areas/questions for research and possible sources - I have had a lot of work to do so I had not had time to start my research yet. I had done a lot of work on my journal and getting my project approved for the ATL skill. I have also done a lot of work on getting the right software for making my animation, which was why I hadn't yet found time to start my research.
  • Evidence that I had started my research, including research into my focus AOI - Same as above as I hadn't started my research.
  • Evaluation and complete bibliography details of the sources used for research - Same as above.
  • Reflection on my research - Same as above
  • Evidence that I have started to work on an initial design/outline for the product - I had already done some brainstorming of this on the blog and come to some conclusions about; what flip I would focus on (Flick flack/back handspring), how many flips I would analyze (one), what kind of video I would make (an animation to explain the flip and extra videos of the actual flip being done) and what software I would use to make my video (Flash). I have also started to draw the outlines of the animation frames I am going to be drawing.
  • Any questions I have for the supervisor - I didn't know what the log form was that we had to sign and Mrs. Maaswinkel told me that this was sent by email but I didn't recall getting that email and I think that I either didn't receive it or that I missed in in my inbox and accidentally put it in the trash.
  • The log form to be signed at the end of every meeting - As I said above I didn't know that we had a log form so I didn't have that with me. I said that I would try and find it in my inbox and otherwise get a copy from someone else. She said that I could come back tomorrow and that she would then sign the form.

Mrs. Maaswinkel said that I should try and start my research as soon as possible and that the next time we met, which would be after that holidays that I should have all my research done and be back on schedule.

In the meeting we also talked a little about how I was planning to make my product. I said that I was going to take the frames that I had made from my video and then use tracing paper to take the outline of the person in each stage of the flip. I would make it into a sort of stick man but then with the circles at every joint, like the way you draw people as a draft.

Mrs. Maaswinkel asked why I didn't just put the pictures straight into the video and I said that as the background is very colored that flash wouldn't be able to recognize where the person was. I also would rather work with a sort of stick figure because it is easier to do in flash and easier to show the movements clearly.

The correct version of Flash

I had a meeting with Mr. Howard to find out which version of flash I should order from Slim. I was unsure which one to take and to be sure I asked a Computer teacher. Out of the different versions I had found, none of them were the correct one. Mr Howard told me how to find the correct version of flash. It turned out that I had to search something else in the search bar to find it. I had searched on Adobe Flash, but I had to just search on flash. These were the results I then got:

Out of these different softwares I could get the english and dutch version for both Windows and Mac. I decided that I would take the english version because all the software I have worked with before has been in english and it is a lot easier for me this way. I am going to make the video on a mac so that is why I also took the Mac version.

Because of all the reasons I mentioned above I ordered the 6th option on the list above, which is in english and for a Mac. This should be delivered within one day, so it should arrive tomorrow, which gives me enough time to install it and make sure it works. Then if there are any problems I can still ask one of the computer teachers for help.

Analysis of Results from the Survey

I took all the results from my survey and to make more sense of them I made them into pie charts. This makes it easier to see trends and spot patterns. These are all of the questions I asked in the survey and a pie chart of all the 50 results I collected.

For this question it is clear that people of the age of my target audience feel that visuals are the most effective when they want to learn something. This is the method they would prefer to have when learning about the free running flip. I am going to take this into account when I am deciding how I am going to teach people the flip.

There is a clear majority that thinks a video of 3-5 minutes is the most effective. It means that it will not be too long that it becomes boring or too short that you don't have time to learn anything. This is useful and if I decide to do a video I will take this into account so that my final product satisfies my target audience.

As with the last question I will take into account that the majority of the people that answered my survey thought that a presentation of 10-20 minutes would be the most effective. In my opinion this is true and it will be a useful piece of research if I do a presentation because it means that I am satisfying the needs of my target audience so that they learn in the best possible way.

For this questions people preferred an interactive activity of more than half an hour to be able to learn something properly. This is a good source for my research if I decide to do an interactive activity. I means I can make it in the way that my target audience would prefer it.

Most people found that 1-2 pages would be sufficient to explain the free running flip with the analysis and for them to understand it. This is all useful for when I decide which method I will use to teach my target audience.

Survey on Target Audience

I made a survey to make sure that my video would be suitable for my target audience. I need to have information about the target audience and how they prefer to learn. My area of Interaction, Approaches to Learning means that I make an alternative way of learning. This had to be of the right level and type to work. This is why I made this survey and carried it out.

This is the survey I made:

I handed out the survey to 50 people of the age of my target audience. This means that I have enough people to have a good overview of the averages and then I can see if there are clear patterns. These are the results of all the 50 people ordered into a table so that it is easier to see any patterns there might be:

The correct version of Flash from Slim

I went to the computer teacher to find out which version of flash I should buy for the mac laptop which I am going to use to make my video. She said that I should print out a copy of all the possibilities and go to Mr. Hare. He is a flash expert and will know exactly which version I should get. I am going to take a screenshot of the possibilities on the website and print this of to show Mr. Hare tomorrow. Then I will try and get the flash software as soon as possible so that if there are any problems I can find them before the summer holiday and ask Mr. Hare how best to solve these problems.
