Back Handspring Videos

This Wednesday during my freerunning training I filmed one of the people who train at the same time as me, doing the back handspring. I made multiple videos to make sure that I had at least one that was really good. He can do it perfectly and I can use this to start making my video and finding out which muscles are used during the flip.

Thoughts on the Video as an Animation

I thought more about doing my video partly as an animation and I looked on the internet to see if I could find some good examples. This is one of the video's I found. It has nothing to do with my topic but I really like the way the drawings are done and put together to make a moving thing. By looking at this video I can see that I can easily make colours appear for the different muscles that are used throughout the flips. I can colour them on the part where they are needed and when I then finally stick everything together the colours will come and go like I planned. This is a lot less tedious than trying to draw this on a video that I filmed of someone doing the flip.

I will still have a video of someone actually doing the flip but I will do the explaining of the video with these types of drawings I think. I will have to experiment with what type of person I should draw and how detailed I should make it. I don't want to make my drawings too detailed because it will be very hard to draw the person the same every time. However, the person needs to have enough details for me to clearly be able to label the muscles.

Possible Flips to Explain

I brainstormed possible flips that I could analyze in my video. I want to do flips that are different and not nearly exactly the same movement, which is why I thought I had to brainstorm a lot and look at the similarities between them.
  • Wall flip
  • Side flip
  • Front flip
  • Back flip
  • Back handspring
  • Round-off
  • Front handspring
These are all possibilities for my video. I can't do all of them completely but I am able to do them with a little help. This is why I am going to film my teachers because they do the flips completely correct.

I really like the wall flip and I can nearly do it by myself. It is quite different to the others on the list and I think that it is a flip people will find cool to learn. I don't really want to do two flips because most flips have the same principles and then in the video I will be explaining things twice, which is a little boring. That is why I think I will do the back handspring because it is different but also really enjoyable to learn. I have not practiced this as much as the wall flip myself but it also requires a lot of practice and concentration.

This is why I have chosen to do the wall flip and the back handspring in my video. I think that these two tricks are also the most enjoyable I find to practice.

Possible Applications for making the Video

I went and talked to Mrs Lira to ask her what applications would be suitable to make a video such as the one I plan to make as my product in this project. She suggested different applications and websites for video making:

  • Imovie
  • Wevideo
  • Flash

I also thought that I could make an animation instead of a video and then draw the main steps in the different flips. This way I could finally stick these together and in flash have them merge into one and other. This would mean a lot less tedious work on the movie to make the colours of the muscles move at the right time. I could then make the animation and then as well have a video of someone actually doing it because otherwise it is a little boring if you only watch a drawing do a flip.

Handing in the Personal Project Proposal

When I decided on my topic I handed in the proposal form for my topic so that the teachers could chose projects to supervise.

Choosing a Topic

I brainstormed a lot of different ideas because I wanted to choose a topic that I would enjoy to do a lot of research on. I enjoy sports and in school, sciences and maths. These are the topics I considered for my personal project:

  • A game lesson for handicapped horse riders. I would design a lesson for handicapped students that ride at the Madurodam Manege. They have lots of different handicaps, physical and mental. I would research their different handicaps and then by playing these games find out how well they could learn the game and to what extent they could play it. I thought of this because I do voluntary work at the Madurodam Manege and the riders their always enjoy it if we do something special (such as a game) for days like easter, Sinterklaas, Koninginnendag.
  • Analyzing the muscles used in different flips in free running. I will make a video that explains which muscles are used, which I will have researched. I will make it as a sort of tutorial that takes you through the steps in the flip. This will help people who are already attempting the flip to improve theirs because they will be able to see what they are doing wrong, and what they have to change to make it better. I thought of this idea because I do free running and I have watched a tutorial before and I found it very helpful to improve my flip.
  • Finding the muscles the rider uses in relation to the muscles a horse uses. I would research the muscles the rider used when riding and the ones the horse uses when being ridden. I would then make a presentation about what I found and make detailed drawings of the muscles in a horse and the muscles in a human who is in the riding position. I would use this to explain about the muscles.
  • Making a training schedule creator. I would find out what training methods (such as doing push-ups) would help you develop different muscles or muscle groups. Then I would make something where you could fill in the muscles you needed to train and then with the research I did into training methods you would get a training schedule, specially for the muscles you want to train.

Finally I chose the idea of analyzing different flips in free running because I really enjoy free running and I like making videos. I also think that the research appeals to me a lot more.

Action Plan

For the personal project we have to make an action plan and tick off things once we have done them. We set deadlines for when certain things within the project have to be finished so that we divide the work over the few months that we have to complete the project. This is the action plan I made for myself and every time I complete something on the plan I will post the new version of the plan with these things ticked off. This is the original action plan that I made for myself.
